What was highly anticipated, has finally come true. Imtiaz ‘Jab We Met’ Ali’s Love Aaj Kal has lived up to its name. At some centres, it even surpassed the monster collections of Ghajini. While Kambakhht Ishq has turned out to be an ‘above average’ film and New York a confirmed ‘hit’, this one is all set to be a ‘super hit’ and the biggest hit of 2009.
Why not a blockbuster, you ask? That’s because the film hasn’t done just as well at single screens. Then, why is it even a hit, you ask? Well, because the number of multiplexes in the country today manage to bring 70% of the film’s revenue. So a bumper harvest at the multiplexes could mean a full house.
In just five days, Love Aaj Kal has collected Rs 34 crore, the highest first week total in Bollywood history. And then again, the collections on Wednesday and Thursday are yet to be added to it.
Does the film deserve all this? Yes, it does. Why? The movie has ‘dum’. From racy dialogues to a contemporary storyline of couples in multiple relationships and tepid affairs that don’t last half the marathon, it mirrors today’s times like no other.
What’s more, the editing is spiffy; the transitions are smooth; and the music is blockbuster. And yes, Saif Ali Khan resurrects his Salaam Namaste role and infuses it with much more confidence and pizzazz. The result is an endearing film that will keep you company long after the credits roll.
